When I first moved to Maui nearly twenty-six years ago, I came to appreciate not only the island’s extraordinary beauty, but also the delicate balance between its natural environment, its people, and the decisions that shape its future. Over time, that curiosity evolved into a deeper interest in how housing, water, infrastructure, environmental stewardship, and public policy affect both the island and the people who call it home. The Maui Stewardship Project is the result of that journey—an independent effort to gather public information, examine past decisions, and encourage thoughtful discussion about Maui’s future
Why This Project Matters
Maui’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and limited resources make every major planning decision important—not only for today’s residents, but for future generations.
Housing, water, infrastructure, transportation, environmental stewardship, and public policy are interconnected. Decisions made in one area often create lasting consequences in another.
Our goal is to gather publicly available information, organize it into meaningful context, help readers recognize the relationships it reveals, and encourage thoughtful discussion grounded in evidence rather than assumption.
